The Tottori Sand Dunes are located in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture. Daisen and Sakaiminato are on the west side of Hakuto Beach. This time, we will introduce the Tottori Sand Dunes in the eastern area.
The Tottori Sand Dunes is a tourist spot with beautiful scenery created by the beauty of natural formations.
You will feel as if you are lost in the vast sand dunes, and the ripples of the sand blowing in the wind create a fantastic sight.
There are also plenty of sand dune activities, such as camel riding, paragliding, and sandboarding, which you can enjoy only in the desert.
What is the Tottori Sand Dunes?
The Tottori Sand Dunes are the largest sand dunes in Japan, located in Tottori Prefecture in western Japan.
As its name suggests, it is characterized by a vast terrain made of sand, covering an area of about 16 square kilometers.
The height of the sand dunes can reach up to 50 meters in some places, and the beauty of the dunes attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad.
It is said that sand dunes were formed by the north wind blowing from the Sea of Japan side and depositing sand.
The sand is very fine and very soft, so you can build sand dunes and play with it.
In addition, you can enjoy the magnificent and beautiful natural scenery from the top of the sand dunes.

It was early spring, so the temperature was moderate.
If you park your bike, I think it’s relatively easy to park.
There are enough cars, but I’ve only been there when they’re free, so I don’t know what will happen during the tourist season.
It may be quite congested, so it may be better to avoid such a period.

What happens when you go beyond the exciting place in the back?
Your imagination will grow and you will want to climb. It is quite steep, so we recommend going up from the gentle side on the right.
Also, if it’s not hot, you should take off your shoes.
This is a view looking down from the top of the sand hill. It’s quite a steep slope and the distance is long and tiring. The white building in the back is a facility that sells souvenirs. From here, it looks pretty far away.
▲There seems to be an inclination angle of 45 degrees. It looks like you can climb it from a distance, but it’s harder than you think. I was able to catch a glimpse of the extreme conditions.

Sand museum
There is a sand sculpture museum near the Tottori Sand Dunes. Every work is so precise and amazing quality that it is hard to believe that it was made with sand. Each work has a theme, and you will be drawn into the world view.
None of the works are as deep as they look, and they are almost flat, but they use perspective to create a sense of depth, just like 3D art. In the museum, there was also an introduction to the creation process. It seems to be made by pouring water on the sand. If you touch it, it will fall apart immediately.

Traditional Japanese toys and a place that recreates a school are on display. Nostalgic, warm, and somewhat sad. There is such an atmosphere. Children enjoyed playing with toys.
It reproduces the school in the early Showa period. There are many things that can be played freely, and there are detailed explanations of how to play, so even first-timers can play right away. It is also fun to play with parents and children. At the end, relatively recent toys were also exhibited, and I felt the changes in children’s play with the times.
