Gassan Lake is a beautiful dam lake created by the Sagae Dam located in Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture.

The dam’s specialty, the Lake Gassan Fountain, has a jet height of 112 meters, the highest in Japan.

The main purpose is flood control of the Sagae River and Mogami River, and hydroelectric power generation.

This dam is managed by the Tohoku Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and plays an important role in supporting water supply and safety in the Murayama region of Yamagata Prefecture.

What is Lake Gassan?

Gassan Lake is a dam lake located in Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture, and its name is taken from the surrounding Mt. Gassan.

Formed by the Sagae Dam, the dam lake offers a vast expanse of water and beautiful surrounding natural scenery.

It is also known as a tourist spot, and many people visit as a place to enjoy the seasonal scenery and nature.

Japan’s largest fountain “Gassan Lake Fountain”

The biggest highlight of Gassan Lake is definitely the Gassan Lake Great Fountain.

As the name suggests, the large fountain that shoots up to a height of 112 meters from the water’s surface is the tallest in Japan.

A spectacular water show is held seven times a day on weekdays and eight times a day on weekends and holidays for about 15 minutes every hour.

The powerful spray of water makes you feel the power of nature.
It is equipped with an overhead main nozzle and eight oscillating diffusion nozzles, and it seems that the launch pattern changes according to the season.
