Overview and characteristics of Hokoshima

Hokoshima is located in Minamisugou Town, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, and is a beautiful island formed by columnar joints of biotite amphibole rhyolite.

Columnar joints were formed on this island about 15 million years ago when magma penetrated the surrounding strata. Geologically, Hokojima plays an important role in the study of the columnar joints of Tojinbo and Oshima.

The top of the island is covered with black pine and other vegetation, and there are also nests of seabirds dotted around it. It is also very popular as a resting place for drivers.
