Overview and characteristics of Akiyoshido

Akiyoshi-do is a limestone cave located in the eastern part of Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which extends beneath Akiyoshidai, one of Japan’s three major karsts. It is known for its magnificent scale and beautiful stalactites.

This cave is the largest limestone cave in Japan, extending 100-200m underground, and has a sightseeing path spanning approximately 1km.。

The three major karsts in Japan include the Hiraodai karst and the Shikoku karst.

History of Akiyoshido

Akiyoshido has a long history and was known as Takido (Takido) before 1926.

It is also designated as a special natural monument and is part of Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park.

Around 1990, cave explorers conducted diving surveys and discovered that Akiyoshido Cave reaches a total length of 8,850m to the Kuzugaoka Cave, which connects to the east.

According to a survey in 2016, it was further extended to 10,300m, ranking it as the third largest in Japan.
