[View from the sky] “Sanbe Iris Line” A course around the only active volcano in San’in│Shimane

Overview and characteristics of Sanpei Iris Line

The Sanbe Iris Line is a road that runs clockwise from the west side of Mt. Sanbe, with the northern half running along the Mt. Sanbe First Plateau Road and the Mt. Sanbe Second Plateau Road, and the southern half running along the Shimane Prefectural Road No. 40 Kawahonhata Line and Shimane Prefectural Road No. 30 Sanpe.
It consists of the Yamakoen Line.

By taking this route, you can start from Ikeda, Sanbe-cho, Ota City, go to Koyabara, Sanpe-cho, Tane, Sanpe-cho, Masuga Pass, Kakui, Iinan-cho, and return to Ikeda, Sanbe-cho, Ota City.

The plateau road on the north side used to be a toll road, but it was opened to the public free of charge in 1987.

The name of this road, Iris,”comes fromIris”, which is the scientific name for the Japanese iris that blooms at Himenogo Pond in Kitanohara.

Part of the road is closed to traffic during the winter, and it remains closed from December to March of the following year.

Mt. Sanbe

Mt. Sanbe is a volcano that towers over Ota City and Iinan Town, Iishi County, in the central part of Shimane Prefecture. It belongs to the Daisen volcanic belt.

It was designated as an active volcano in the 2003 (Heisei 15) definition review of active volcanoes. Part of Daisen-Oki National Park.

It has been selected as one of Japan’s 200 famous mountains.
