Overview and characteristics of “Harajiri Falls”

Harajiri Falls is a natural gem that has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls, located in Harajiri, Ogata-cho, Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture.

Its characteristic 120m wide and 20m high waterfall is known as the ”Niagara of the East” due to its magnificent beauty.

The origin of waterfalls and the beauty of nature

Harajiri Falls was formed by the collapse of welded tuff. Beautiful columnar joints*1 can be seen on the cliff face of the waterfall, and their unique beauty fascinates visitors.

The waterfall was formed by erosion after the pyroclastic flow that accompanied the eruption of Mt. Aso cooled and solidified, and water began to flow again.

This process is also the same as the nearby “Shinda-no-taki” waterfall.

※1 What is columnar joint? a phenomenon in which rocks split vertically into uniform columnar shapes. This occurs as the rock cools and contracts, often forming hexagonal columns. Columnar joints create beautiful natural landforms, and are often seen especially at waterfalls and cliff faces.
Spots where you can see columnar joints include Tojinbo and Hokojima.

Surrounding facilities and activities

A wooden suspension bridge called Takimi Bridge is built downstream of the waterfall, and there is also a submerged bridge just upstream.

There is a promenade that goes around the waterfall while crossing these bridges, allowing you to experience the power of the waterfall up close.

You can also go down to the shore of the waterfall basin or take a boat ride around the waterfall basin, where you can fully enjoy the beauty of nature.Attractions around Harajiri Falls

There is a roadside station, Harajiri Falls, on the left bank just downstream of Harajiri Falls, and you can use its parking lot when touring the falls. Approximately 500 meters upstream of the waterfall, there is Harajiri Bridge, a five-arch stone bridge built in 1923, where you can enjoy historical elements.

Furthermore, approximately 300,000 tulips are planted in the rice fields around Harajiri Falls during the fallow season, and a tulip festival is held in April.

*Note 1: Car access to the waterfall area is restricted during this period, so please be careful.
*Note 2: As the event will be held in a rice field, sandals and pumps are not suitable.
