Paleozoic limestone layers spread across Ofunato Inner Bay, and it can be seen that from about 400 million years ago it was a warm sea area where coral, trilobites, and ammonites lived.

The black mudstone of the Goishi Coast was formed as a thermally metamorphosed rock area about 130,000 years ago when marine snow was deposited in the ocean trench and the mud was pushed up against the ocean floor plate.

Marls, coals, black mudstones, hornstones, and even contact metamorphic rocks are found in this area, and its geological history is evidence of tectonic deformation accompanied by forest fires.
