Overview of “Tamaki Shrine”

Tamaki Shrine is a shrine located in Totsukawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, just below the summit of Mt. Tamaki.

This shrine is one of the sacred mountains of the Omine Mountains, and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Omine Okugado.

The shrine office, kitchen, and temple bell are important cultural properties of the country, and the grounds are home to a group of giant cedar trees designated as a natural monument of Nara Prefecture.

Tamaki Shrine has a long history, and according to the shrine’s legend it was founded by Emperor Sujin, but the year of its founding is unknown.

The name of the shrine comes from Tamaishi-sha, a subsidiary shrine whose deity is a stone, and it is said that the shrine originated from the worship of the mountain as a deity.
