Overview and characteristics of Shiroyone Senmaida
Shiroyone Senmaida is a beautiful rice terrace located in Shiroyone-cho, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture.As the name suggests, there are 1004 terraced rice fields.
This place is a special place that was designated as a national scenic spot in 2001. Shiroyone Senmaida is located on the north coast of the Noto Peninsula and spreads out on a small cliff between National Route 249 and the Sea of Japan.
The land is fertile and rice is grown under unique conditions.
Salt pans once existed in this area, but due to coastal erosion, they are no longer practiced.
Many volunteers work together to maintain this beautiful landscape during rice planting and harvesting. The scenery of Shiroyone Senmaida is a spectacular view that stretches out towards the Sea of Japan, and is one of the tourist attractions on the Noto Peninsula.
In 2011, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recognized it as a World Agricultural Heritage Site, and its value has been highly evaluated.
Ownership system of Shiroyone Senmaida
Currently, the cultivation and preservation activities of Shiroyone Senmaida are managed by the Shiroyone Senmaida Aikokai. Additionally, there is a Senmaida Owner Trust system where you can become an owner.
The annual membership fee is 20,000 yen, and once you become an owner, you can own one rice field.
If you wish to have additional rice fields, each rice field costs 3,000 yen, but you can add up to 2 rice fields.
As a bonus, you will receive 10 kg of harvested rice (Haza dried Koshihikari), local wild vegetables, and the erection of an owner nameplate on your rice field.
Through this system, you can deepen your ties with the local community and contribute to maintaining the beautiful landscape.
Sparkling illumination in the ridges
Shiroyone Senmaida becomes even more beautiful during winter with special events.
This event, called “Aze no Kirameki Illumination”, is sponsored by the Tourism Division of the Wajima City Exchange Policy Department and has been held since 2011 with the aim of attracting winter tourists.
For this event, 25,000 solar-powered LED lights will be installed on the banks of the rice fields, and will beautifully decorate the rice terraces by changing colors every 15 minutes for four hours after sunset.
This sight is often referred to as a “gaming rice field“, and its beauty is worth seeing.
In 2012, it was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest solar-powered LED display.
