Metasequoia is a gymnosperm and belongs to the genus Metasequoia of the Cupressaceae (sometimes called the Cedaraceae), which is classified into the Pinaceae.

This tree has an extremely high growth capacity, and mature metasequoias are known to reach a height of approximately 115 meters.
