Overview of “Zenigata Sunae”

Zenigata Sunae, located in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a huge sand painting that imitates the Kan’ei Tsuho built in the Edo period.

It is oval in size, 122 meters long and 90 meters wide, and when viewed from the top of Kotohiro Park, it looks like a perfect circle.

There is a theory that it was built in 1633 (10th year of Kanei) by the local people to welcome Takatoshi Ikoma, the lord of the Marugame domain, when he was patrolling the territory, and that it was built in a hurry in 1855 as the first lord of the Marugame domain. However, there is no single definitive origin story, and much of it is based on folklore and legend.
