Overview of “Zenigata Sunae”
Zenigata Sunae, located in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a huge sand painting that imitates the Kan’ei Tsuho built in the Edo period.
It is oval in size, 122 meters long and 90 meters wide, and when viewed from the top of Kotohiro Park, it looks like a perfect circle.
It is lit up at night and you can enjoy its fantastic appearance. Another highlight is the ”Zenigata makeover” in the spring and fall, and the sight of the entire community participating in repair work when sand is washed away by typhoons.
history and legend
There are various theories about the origin of Zenigata Sunae.
There is a theory that it was built in 1633 (10th year of Kanei) by the local people to welcome Takatoshi Ikoma, the lord of the Marugame domain, when he was patrolling the territory, and that it was built in a hurry in 1855 as the first lord of the Marugame domain. There is a theory that it was built to show off to the 7th feudal lord, Kyogoku Rotetsu.
However, there is no single definitive origin story, and much of it is based on folklore and legend.

Admission to Zenigata Sunae is free, but please note that entering the Sunae is prohibited.
Also, since it is light up at night, you can enjoy the fantastic sand paintings from sunset to 10pm.
There are many other sightseeing spots in the surrounding area, and you can enjoy them along with Kotohiki Park and the World Coin Museum.
