Overview of “Kumagawa-juku”
Kumagawa-juku is located in Wakasa-cho, Fukui Prefecture, and is a historic post town built by the Numata clan during the Muromachi period.
In 1589, the lord of Obama Castle, Asano Nagamasa, established it as a post station on the Sabakaido Road, and during the Edo period it boasted the most prosperity on the Sabakaido Road.
However, it has avoided decline since modern times, and its value as a preservation district has been recognized, and in 1996 it was selected as a nationally important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.

SabaKaido is a road where peddlers carried mackerel caught in Wakasa Bay on foot to Kyoto.
At that time, there was no refrigeration technology, so they were packed with salt.
Even now, there are many mackerel sushi restaurants along the road. Kumagawa-juku was a post station on the Sabakaido road.
Kumagawa-juku is divided into Kaminomachi, Nakanomachi, and Shimonomachi.
“Roadside Station Wakasa Kumagawa-juku” is located southeast of Kumagawa-juku. There were also public toilets scattered around, so I felt safe.
