Overview of “Tojinbo”

Tojinbo” located in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, is characterized by a unique topography where the rock surface of columnar joints continues for 1km, and has been designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument.

The highlight is the “Earth Cliff”, which is more than 20 meters high.

A columnar joint is a geological structure with regular cracks on both sides called joints, and the cracks form a regularly arranged structure of polygonal columns.

Columnar joints occur in many types of igneous rocks and are formed when the rock cools and contracts.

Columnar joints can occur in cooling lava flows and volcanic ash flow tuff (welded tuff) and in some shallow igneous intrusions. It can also occur rarely when sedimentary rocks are heated by nearby hot magma.

The pillars vary in diameter from 3 meters to a few centimeters, and some are 30 meters high.

They are typically parallel and straight, but may be curved.

A regularly arranged structure of regular, straight, large-diameter pillars is called a colonnade.

In contrast, irregular, less straight, small diameter arrays are called entablatures.

The number of sides of individual columns varies from 3 to 8, with 6 being the most common.
