The Suzuka Circuit, built by Honda in 1962, was Japan’s first fully paved circuit with spectator seats.
Initially, after the closure of the Tamagawa Speedway, there were almost no permanent circuits in Japan, and the decision to build one was made due to the enthusiasm of Honda founder Soichiro Honda.
Construction required a large investment and several potential locations were considered.
In the end, a hilly area near the Suzuka Plant was chosen, and a course with a lap length of approximately 4 km was created.
The course layout was initially designed by Sadao Shiozaki, an amateur, but the detailed design progressed with the advice of John Hugenholtz.
The circuit was completed in 1962, and the first All Japan Championship Road Race was held in the same year.
The total construction cost reached 1.5 billion yen, and the facility has been expanded since then.
