The castle town formation of Kakunodate Town began in 1590 when the Tozawa clan built Kakunodate Castle.
After that, the Satake clan ruled, and it is said that the famous weeping cherry trees along Samurai Residence Street were brought from Kyoto by Yoshiaki Satake’s wife.
In 1976, it was selected as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.”
