Overview of “Aoike”
Among the “Twelve Lakes” in the Shirakami Mountains, the most famous one is “Aoike“, which shines in cobalt blue.
There is a large rotting beech tree lying in the water, and the water is so clean that you can see the fallen tree at the bottom.
Moreover, the surface of the lake that looks blue while being transparent is mysterious.
The location is a little east of Route 101.
We recommend stopping by when driving along the Sea of Japan side of Aomori!

Shirakami Mountains/Twelve Lakes
The Shirakami-Sanchi stretches across Aomori and Akita, and was registered as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1993 due to its vast natural beech forests and ecosystem value.
Juniko is said to have been created by a landslide caused by the great earthquake that occurred in 1704.
When viewed from the collapsed mountain, it looked like 12 lakes, hence the name 12 lakes.
Among them, “Aoike” is especially famous.
▽It’s hard to tell from the image, but there is Aoike Pond among the twelve lakes.
why does it look blue
It seems that the Aomori Environmental Health Center has investigated, but it seems that the reason is still not well understood.
