Hokoshima is located in Minamisugou Town, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, and is a beautiful island formed by columnar joints of biotite amphibole rhyolite.
Columnar joints were formed on this island about 15 million years ago when magma penetrated the surrounding strata. Geologically, Hokojima plays an important role in the study of the columnar joints of Tojinbo and Oshima.
