The Tohoku Shinkansen is a section that connects Tokyo to Shin-Aomori.
In addition to providing mutual direct service with the Hokkaido Shinkansen (Shin-Aomori – Shin-Hakodate Hokuto), it also provides direct service with the Yamagata Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen.
Until then, the Tohoku Shinkansen had started at Ueno Station, but in 1991, the Tokyo-Ueno line opened, and 20 years after construction began, the long-awaited train service to Tokyo Station was realized.
The Hachinohe-Shin-Aomori line opened in 2010, marking the start of the entire line 39 years after the development plan was decided.
Direct operation with the Hokkaido Shinkansen began in March 2016.
