Onigajo, located in Kimoto-cho, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, is a coastal scenic spot designated as a national scenic spot.

Onigajo is also the setting for the legends of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and Tamamaru.

According to legend, Sakanoue Tamuramaro was ordered by Emperor Kanmu to subjugate the pirate Tayamaru who was ravaging this land.

This magnificent legend is deeply connected to Onigajo, and you can visit it as if you were reliving the events in the legend.

World heritage

Both “Onigajo” and “Shishiiwa”, which will be described later, are declared World Heritage Sites, and there are so many that you may wonder “What is this?” It seems that it is included as part of the pilgrimage route.

By the way, “Onigajo” and “Shishiiwa” are included in “Natural Monuments and Places of Scenic Beauty” in “Pilgrimage Routes”.
