Ise Grand Shrine

Overview of Ise Jingu (Naiku)

When many people hear the name Ise Jingu, they probably think of a sacred place in Japan.
Ise Jingu is located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan, and its official name is “Jingu.”
However, it is generally known as “Ise Jingu”.

Ise Jingu has been considered the highest special shrine since ancient times, and is currently the main sect of the Shinto Shrine Headquarters, as well as the ”general guardian deity of the Japanese people”.’

What are Naiku and Geku?

Ise Grand Shrine has two main shrines: Naiku (inner shrine) and Geku (outer shrine). These exist to enshrine different gods within Ise Grand Shrine.

  1. Naiku (Kotaijingu): Naiku is the main shrine within Ise Grand Shrine, and its official name is “Kotaijingu” (Kotaijingu).

The Naiku is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami (also known as Amaterasu Omikami, or Amaterasu Omikami), who appears in Japanese mythology.

Naiku is a particularly important place within Ise Grand Shrine, and is visited by many worshipers.
  2. Geku (Toyouke Omikamigu): The Geku, officially called Toyouke Omikamigu, is located a certain distance from the Inner Shrine.

The outer shrine enshrines Toyouke Omikami, who is considered the guardian of food, clothing, and shelter.

There is a large torii gate at the end of the approach. One round takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The deeper you go, the more mysterious the atmosphere becomes surrounded by trees.

“Oharaimachi” and “Okage Yokocho”

「Oharai machi」

Oharai machi, the approach road leading to Ise Jingu Shrine, and Okage Yokocho, an area that recreates the atmosphere from the Edo period to the early Meiji period.

Both are lined with many shops where you can enjoy local gourmet food.

Oharai machi is known for its traditional architecture and beautiful scenery.

This area is lined with restaurants serving local cuisine such as Ise udon and tekone sushi, as well as souvenir shops selling pearls and Ise tea.

Almost all the buildings are wooden structures with gables, gables, and gambrels, and maintenance of the landscape is important.

Enjoy eating while walking at Okage Yokocho

Akafuku Main Store sells Ise udon, satsuma-age, and a variety of other foods that you can enjoy while walking around. Along with the approach to the shrine, there are so many different shops that you’ll never get bored. You can enjoy it no matter how many times you visit.

By the way, Akafuku has a “Tsutsutachimochi” that can only be purchased on the first day of every month. You can also enjoy Akafuku Oshiruko in the winter and Akafuku Ice in the summer.
