Doai Station, located at the northernmost tip of Gunma Prefecture, is a station on the Joetsu Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East).
Overview and characteristics of Doai Station
This station is located on the border between the Takasaki branch and the Niigata branch. Doai Station has a unique feature; its down platform is located inside the Shin-Shimizu tunnel, so it is popularly known as “Japan’s No. 1 Mole Station.”
Additionally, this station has been certified as one of the “100 best stations in the Kanto region”.
Why is it deep underground?
The reason Doai Station’s platform is underground stems from its historical background.
The early Joetsu Line was a single-track line, and the station building was located at the entrance to Shimizu Tunnel. However, when double tracking was implemented in 1967, the New Shimizu Tunnel was excavated for the new outbound line, but at that time it was necessary to go deeper than the Shimizu Tunnel.
The outbound platform of Doai Station was installed in it.
In this way, as the railway was expanded and improved, the station was placed underground, resulting in an unusual station structure with an elevation difference of 70.7 meters between the station building and the platform.
